WHO WE ARE
Established in 1977, Deaf Awareness Week (DAW) is a local (San
Antonio) organization of Deaf and Hearing educators, counselors,
interpreters and other professionals dedicated to promoting Deaf
culture and awareness in San Antonio.
This committee was originally formed to "educate San Antonio about the
needs of its Deaf citizens".
Since its inception, DAW has been actively involved in promoting Deaf
awareness through exhibits at local malls, television programs, the
Miss Deaf San Antonio Pageant, children's events and a week-long
celebration of Deaf Culture, Deafestival.
MISSION STATEMENT
To bridge the Deaf and Hearing worlds through education, information and inspiration.
PURPOSE
To raise funds for the purpose of:
- Providing information and resources for parents of Deaf children and the community at large.
- Promoting city-wide social events for Deaf children.
- Promoting awareness of Deaf culture by sponsoring events such as Miss Deaf San Antonio Pageant and Deafestival.
- Providing Deaf children with successful Deaf adult role models.
- Educating the community about the unique needs and abilities of its Deaf citizens.
- Bridging the cultural gap between the Deaf and Hearing worlds.
